Kentucky OSHA Awards Highest Commendation to Miller-Valentine Commercial Construction
First General Contractor in the state to receive Kentucky’s highest award for safety excellence
Dayton, OH – January 30, 2008: Miller-Valentine Commercial Construction has received the “STAR” designation from the Kentucky Department of Labor, office of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA). J.R. Gray, Commissioner of Labor, presented the award to leaders of MV Commercial Construction earlier this month, identifying the company as the first and currently the only general contractor in the state of Kentucky to receive this prestigious distinction.
The Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) “STAR” designation is awarded to commercial construction contractors with safety programs that have been scored and documented by Kentucky OSHA to be superior within the industry. To be eligible, contractors must have a superior safety record and maintain an extensive training program.
In September 2007, Kentucky OSHA representatives performed an in-depth audit and analysis of Miller-Valentine Commercial Construction’s existing safety policies and procedures. The audit consisted of two segments: first, a thorough review of policy documents, incident reports, and other such documents, and second, Kentucky OSHA auditors visited Miller-Valentine Construction’s active job sites, interviewing employees and sub-contractors, to determine if the company’s written policies and procedures as well as its daily worksite practices met the strict criteria of this program.
“We are very proud to have earned this designation,” said Nick Beach, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, MV Commercial Construction. “We have always been focused on the highest level of job site safety,” said Beach, “this designation says to our Associates, subcontractors and clients that we really walk the talk of job site safety.”
MV Commercial Construction also earned the VPP “STAR” designation in Ohio in September 2007; resulting in the company being the first contractor in the nation to be Certified Statewide. Beach added that because several of the company’s customers are also VPP certified within their own industry, the “STAR” designation is meaningful and can be a significant factor when considering various contractors.
