Dayton will buy 25 lots for housing project

The city of Dayton is set to acquire 25 vacant lots for a planned housing development.
The lots will be used for the development of approximately 40 single-family homes in Dayton's Roosevelt
neighborhood, near the recently dedicated Greater Dayton Recreations Center at 2021 W. Third St. The
homes will be developed by the St. Mary Development Corp., Miller-Valentine Group and the city of Dayton.
This new development was helped by city commission approving a pilot process that cuts the acquisition time
of property from 18 months to 120 days. The shortened process, or expedited tax foreclosure program,
makes it possible to purchase vacant, tax-delinquent properties from Montgomery County in approximately
one-fourth the time as it previously did.
The city has been working with Montgomery County officials to create the shortened process for about a
year. The new process is a pilot program that will be evaluated after its initial use, but could be made
permanent.
"We are happy to take this essential step in cooperation with our development partners and the Montgomery
County auditor and treasurer," Aaron Sorrell, city of Dayton manager of Housing and Neighborhood
Development, said in a news release. "The expedited property acquisition policy shows real promise in
supporting redevelopment of neighborhoods such as Roosevelt."
The 25 lots will be purchased for $1,200 each and are mostly on North Kilmer, Clemmer, North Woodward
and West Second streets.
