5 residence halls on Brown Street are part of $28M in projects at UD

DAYTON - University of Dayton trustees approved $28 million in projects Thursday that include five new residence halls on six acres at Brown and Caldwell streets.
University officials said without this latest project the university could have faced a housing shortage by 2014. The new construction is expected to house 427 upperclassmen and some of the school's growing international student population.
President Daniel J. Curran said the residences are part of the school's master plan to attract more out-of-state and international students.
"These projects are part of our strategic plan to create and sustain a strong learning-living atmosphere on campus and recruit students across the nation and the globe," Curran said.
UD's campus size has nearly doubled over the last five years to 373 acres, an increase that dovetails with growth in enrollment and research.
The construction site includes the former Frank Z Chevrolet dealership at 1620 Brown St. and the university's former Caldwell Street Center.
The Frank Z land is owned by project contractor Miller-Valentine Group, which said up to 400 jobs could be created when construction begins this spring. In October the state awarded the city of Dayton $750,000 in Clean Ohio Assistance Funds for the site.
