MILLER-VALENTINE GROUP NEW CINCINNATI OFFICE GOES GREEN

Building supports new strategic direction – brings together commercial and residential groups CINCINNATI (October 09, 2007) — Miller-Valentine Group has taken occupancy of its new Cincinnati office building, an 80,000 square-foot, three-story facility which employs the latest in energy efficient technology and building products.

The new building, located on WaterStone Boulevard in Deerfield Township, integrates an environmentally friendly design and brings together employees of Miller-Valentine Group’s commercial division, formerly housed at One WaterStone Place, and the residential division, previously located on Glendale/Milford Road in Blue Ash.

“Constructing an energy efficient building calls for a careful evaluation of every component that goes into a building, including lighting, heating, ventilation, waste disposal and even the structure itself,” said Jack Goodwin, Partner, and President MV Commercial Development. “We really wanted to design a building that is not only energy efficient, but also is in harmony with the natural features and resources surrounding the site.”

Miller-Valentine’s new Cincinnati office utilizes many of the principles of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™, which is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Energy saving features in the new building include a geothermal heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system complete with energy recovery units; an irrigation system that utilizes retained rainwater collection before using city treated water; interior lighting throughout the building which is controlled by occupancy sensors; and a direct digital control system that operates the HVAC and lighting systems to optimize energy efficiency. In addition, the natural wooded environment surrounding much of the site was left undistributed. Environmental friendly building materials such as bamboo wood flooring were used in constructing the building.

“Miller-Valentine’s new Cincinnati office is a model for companies seeking to introduce sustainable, environmentally friendly practices into their facilities. This building sends a message that Miller-Valentine cares about the health of employees as well as about the impact this development has on the surrounding environment and its community,” said Randal Merrill, LEED AP, and vice president of architecture at McGill, Smith, Punshon. “Green design is about more than what building materials are used; it is about the users comfort level and quality of life when they are in the space. What is amazing about Miller-Valentine’s new Cincinnati office is that there is literally green everywhere, inside and out. Employees will benefit not only from the building’s high-performance energy-efficient features but also from the views and natural daylight the space provides.”

“This move is about more than a new building, it’s about an evolved strategy for Miller- Valentine Group,” said Goodwin. “Miller-Valentine Group’s 10-year vision is to fully explore and develop the natural synergies between our residential and commercial business lines. This combination of our associates’ experiences and skills will enhance our ability to grow the development of our mixed-use products that the market – here and throughout the country – is demanding at a quickly expanding rate in an environmentally appropriate manner.”
