Miller-Valentine Group Announces New Construction on St. John’s Baptist Church in Columbia, Md.
DAYTON, Ohio (October 6, 2008) –Miller-Valentine Group announced today that it
began construction on St. John’s Baptist Church in Columbia, Maryland.
Since its founding nearly 30 years ago, the St. John’s congregation has grown to
approximately 750 members and needs more space for its current membership and for
growth. The church’s new facility will be the first building owned and operated by St.
John’s Baptist Church. For the past 10 years, the church has leased its 2,000 square foot
facility, and before that, shared a facility with multiple faith-based communities in
Columbia.
“We are a growing congregation and our current place of worship is very space
constrained,” said Joyce Henderson, St. John’s Baptist Church Building Committee
Chair. "Miller-Valentine designed our new facility that will fit well within our
community and will help us achieve our mission and offer more programs and services to
our members and the surrounding community."

The new building is a single-story, 30,000 square-foot church that features an
octagonal shaped sanctuary that will seat nearly 500 people. The design also has a multipurpose
area that can be subdivided into four classrooms for various activities.
Henderson said the church leadership selected Miller-Valentine Group after
reviewing the submitted design, and two members of the congregation’s New Church
Construction Executive Committee came to the Dayton area to visit three religious
facilities and campuses that Miller-Valentine has completed for other congregations.
“We were impressed by the strength and range of Miller-Valentine’s work—and
particularly with its experience in designing and constructing churches and other
religious facilities,” added Henderson.
“St. John’s wanted a semi-circular floor plan, so we worked with them to develop
a unique and efficient octagonal design to help with traffic flow,” said Rex Manemann,
Vice President of the Design and Renovation Group. “Our building design will bring value
and help St. John’s Baptist Church better serve its members and the surrounding
community.”
Construction is expected to be completed in June 2009.
