Miller-Valentine Group Wins ABC Award of Excellence
Two WaterStone Place honored for excellence in design/build construction
CINCINNATI (December 15, 2008) - Miller-Valentine Group was recently honored by the Ohio Valley Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (OVABC) as the recipient of an Award of Excellence, the highest honor awarded by ABC. The Two WaterStone Place project won the Award of Excellence in the design/build category. In addition, Miller-Valentine received two Awards of Merit - one for a Dayton-area project and one for a Cincinnati-area project.
Two WaterStone Place is an 80,000 square-foot, multi-tenant, three-story facility which uses the latest in energy efficient technology and building products. Located on WaterStone Boulevard in Deerfield Township, this building features an environmentally-friendly design and was built to bring together the Cincinnati Associates of Miller-Valentine Group's commercial and residential divisions into a single location.
"The people who work on our projects have a real ‘entrepreneurial spirit' and they go in to every project with a sense of ownership in the outcome", noted Nick Beach, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, MV Commercial Construction. "We are honored to be recognized for our efforts by receiving these awards from ABC."
Two Waterstone Place utilizes many of the principles of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating SystemTM, which is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. "Designing an energy efficient building calls for a careful evaluation of every component that goes into the building, everything from lighting, heating and ventilation to waste disposal and even the structure itself," said Jack Goodwin, Partner, and President MV Commercial Development. "We charged ourselves with the challenge of designing a building that is not only energy efficient, but also is in harmony with the natural features and resources surrounding the site."
Miller-Valentine Group also received two Awards of Merit - one for the Antioch University McGregor building in Yellow Springs northeast of Dayton and one for the Midland Company office building in Amelia, just outside of Cincinnati in Clermont County.
The 94,000 square-foot Antioch University McGregor building presented a unique challenge, not only did the design have to meet the expectations of the University's board members, but also of the tightly knit Yellow Springs community. The building was designed in such a way to become the gateway to Yellow Springs - featuring an open orientation toward the community's main street - and community input and acceptance was crucial.
The Midland Office Center is a five-story, 225,000 square-foot office building which is the second building in a series of planned expansions to create a comprehensive campus for The Midland Company. This building was designed to have all of the modern amenities of a 21st century building, including a 300-seat Training Center with plasma TV's in the corridors, while still being compatible in style to the original facility on the campus built in 1996.
Previously, Miller-Valentine has won several OVABC awards for its renovation and design/build projects. Miller-Valentine Group's work on Cox Ohio Publishing's new Media Center earned the company an Award of Excellence in the construction category and the award for the Construction Project of the Year in 2007. In addition, Miller-Valentine Group won the Award of Excellence from OVABC in the renovation category in 2006 for the Park Place at Lytle project (Cincinnati) and the Award of Excellence in the design/build category for the Chas. Seligman Distributing project in Northern Kentucky.
